I found this in a fun book for kids…easy stuff they can do with some help from a grown-up. I made the dough and then let #1 & #2 make whatever shapes they wanted. Okay, #2 took a bite and then threw the dough on the floor, but at least I tried. #1 had fun making different shapes. They were good hot out of the oven, but I thought they were even better once they had cooled. Much better than any pretzel I’ve bought in the last 10 years, especially that disappointing one I bought a few months ago in the Target Cafe when a craving hit.1 package yeast (or 2 1/4 tsp)
1 T sugar
1 1/2 c warm water
4 c flour
1 tsp salt
1 egg, beaten
Mix water and yeast together in a large bowl until the yeast dissolves. Add salt, sugar, and flour. Mix and knead the dough until it is smooth. Roll and twist the dough into letters, numbers, and animal shapes. Lay the pretzels on a greased cookie sheet, brush with the beaten egg, then lightly sprinkle with extra salt. Bake at 425 for 12-15 minutes.
*I sprinkled mine with kosher salt.
