The LDS cannery is an amazing resource for canning items for your food storage. Wheat, oats, powdered milk, carrots…plus tons more good stuff. They only allow you to can items that they offer, BUT you can check out a canner (at no cost!) and can your own bulk items at home! And it’s so easy! Kammi (who wouldn’t let me take her picture) and I canned salt, popcorn, beans, split peas, and sugar that we found for good deals, but were all in 25 pound bags. This way they’ll last forever, won’t get bug infestations, and are easy to organize! I also did a can with a little bit of cash…small bills (in case of emergency people will probably not have change. We heard about someone who had to pay $20 for a case of water because that was his smallest bill). I also put in some fruit snacks and bubbles for the kids, and some packets of carnation instant breakfast. I meant to put some suckers and little activities in too, but I didn’t have enough time to get it all together. When I’m more organized I’ll do another one. Today I canned white and brown sugar with my sister. Tomorrow my great friend Katie is canning hygiene items…soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc. So many great ideas!
